People want to know why so many businesses are “leafing” Selinsgrove!

That may sound like a bad pun, but just keep reading.

As you’ve read in my page 2 story, businesses are leaving Selinsgrove. In January, Selinsgrove might be losing another business. High Vacancy Fire Arms on Market Street.

Just last month a Selinsgrove business owner Nathan Fisher of Vivace Music at 28 N Market was fined $150. His crime? He wanted to replace a tree in front his of store to make it look nicer with another tree.

“I really care about plants/the environment and took great care in selecting what was planted…I put a sign up like I did with the mural as a courtesy to passersbys so they wouldn’t think I was removing the tree without replacing it,” Fisher told the OSN.

The town wasn’t having it!

Borough Manager Paul Williams filed the complaint against Nathan Fisher for breaking the rules of the Shade Tree Commission.

“Its a violation of the Shade Tree Commission,” Williams told the OSN.

Thats right! Selinsgrove has a Shade Tree Commission!

And it turns out that trimming or replacing of any tree on borough property without the permission of the Shade Tree Commission is an offense.

Now I like trees as much as anyone. But seriously?

As a small business owner myself, I can tell you that $150 is a lot of money. Why not try to work with the business? The owner was just only trying to make their property look nicer for the people.

I’ve spent a lot of time talking to business owners. They give a lot of reasons why they are hurting. It seems like the main reason is that people just aren’t spending money. No one is saying that that is the borough’s fault.  But fining a business for replacing a tree sends the wrong message not only to the businesses here but to the businesses who may be thinking about coming to our great town.
We have a lot of trees in Selinsgrove, but it seems like every month we have fewer and fewer businesses.

Hopefully, the borough can find a way to work closer with businesses before more owners make like a tree…

I think you should continue to plug “Chase’s GoFundMe page”. It has been some time since anyone gave. If it is a cause important enough to push in the first place it seems it ought to be important enough to keep plugging till they reach the $5000
    goal.

As for why people don’t go downtown. If you want to find out ask the people in the Grove not the merchants. “Do you shop downtown and if not why?” Then go to the merchants with your results.

You continue to do a great job. Love your stuff.

Well if that’s the law, I think we should all be aware of that or maybe ask some professional help in tree trimming like https://blueoxtrees.com who knows the rules and regulations when it comes to those kinds of concerns.
