GROVE SCHOOLS TO “WAIT TO SEE” ON TRANSGENDER BATHROOM POLICY

2/23/2017

By Hilde Kate Lysiak

Despite a change in federal guidelines Selinsgrove School District will not be changing its policy on transgender bathrooms — at least for now.

“The district will continue to study information as it becomes available as well as wait to see what the Supreme Court decides on the issue,” Selinsgrove Superintendent Chad Cohrs told the Orange Street News in an email.

Yesterday the Trump administration announced it would withdraw President Obama guidelines that schools must allow transgender students to use any bathroom they want to use. President Trump’s guidelines state that local schools are allowed to decide the issue themselves.

The Selinsgrove School board had earlier said that they were simply following federal guidelines when they changed the policy to allow transgender students to use the bathroom of their choice.

I hope they keep things as they stand. Transgender individuals already have enough stress in their lives. They shouldn’t have to worry about using the bathroom.

There are two issues: Who has the right to decide, and what the basic question is really about.

As to the first, American tradition holds that social policy decisions should be made as close to the people as possible, meaning local school boards and after that, individual states. Nothing of this nature should ever be “handed down from Mount Olympus,” meaning Washington, as though this is where all “moral truth” is discovered. That is dictation and not democracy.

As to the second, it does not appear in the discussion what really is a “transgender” person. Could it be someone physically male who wishes he were female, or who has convinced himself he is somehow “really” female ? These things are wholly subjective and of more concern to psychiatry than to persons deciding public policy. Whoever is sympathetic should help the stressed and confused get counselling.

I think it is ridiculously nuts that the people paying taxes, don’t have a say .
And that our children have to change for a handful .
Why do our children have to go to the special bathrooms ??? Its crazy
If we as parents would all decide to take our children out of school, guess who wouldnt have jobs .
I think the school district should have never made the decision without a vote from we the taxpayers and should have to put things back the way they were.
