The OSN was working on a story in Patagonia, Arizona when a law enforcement officer threatened the reporter with arrest unless she stopped reporting the news.
The OSN was biking down Roadrunner Lane investigating the tip at about 1:30 pm on February 18th when the reporter was stopped by Patagonia Marshal Joseph Patterson and asked for identification.
The Orange Street News identified herself as a member of the media, including name and phone number.
“I don’t want to hear about any of that freedom of the press stuff,” said Patterson.
The Marshal continued “I’m going to have you arrested and thrown in juvey. “
The Marshal didn’t have his lights on and passed several people who were on the streets without stopping them or questioning them.
“I can have you arrested, do you understand?” the Marshal answered.
Asked what he could arrested for, the officer first said it was for “disobeying his command,” then said it was for riding on the wrong side of the road. Finally, the officer said a Mountain Lion was spotted in the area despite their being other people in the area who were not kicked off the road.
“I’m worried about your safety, the area you were in we were dealing with a mountain lion,” said Patterson.”
“I gave you a lawful order and if you disobey a law enforcement officer….Lying to me and saying you were going to your friends house wasn’t acceptable.”
“If you paste my face on the internet it’s against the law so I’m not giving you permission to use my picture or my face on the internet, do you understand all that?”
The OSN answered, “I understand all that.”
The court says the First Amendment gives citizens the right to record police officers in public while they are performing their duties. But that doesn’t mean you’re allowed to record if you’re doing so secretly interfering with the officer, or otherwise breaking the law.
The Officer told the reporter he was calling her parents.
“You aren’t an adult so don’t act like,” Marshal Patterson said before driving off.

Good journalists are necessary to a free and informed country! Keep up the good work! (And be careful).

Funny how you went straight from cop hating to Trump bashing. Nothing in this article has anything to do about Trump, but you want your hatred to spread. Daniel, you are completely right on this one. I’ve watched Donald Trump since 1970s when he first became famous for his brilliant financial genius and political savvy. He has always been polite, even when walking off a set in an interview, he still stood up and shook hand of interviewer before walking away. He isn’t a racist either, he gave ONE MILLION DOLLARS to Jesse Jackson so he could start his campaign for president in 1988, as first black man to run for the office. There’s a video on You Tube of him thanking Trump for “a lifetime of service to the black community.” I could go on, but his generosity was legendary always. He always loved America, too, and when he saw that America was about to be completely destroyed, with Hillary as one of the culprits, he knew he had to run for president and save her. I’ve watched him since he’s been in office and he is amazing and is restoring our freedom, our pride and our dignity. Whenever anyone talks against Pres Trump I find that invariably that person has never watched any of his speeches, never tried to find out what the pres actually said, only what CNN, MSNBC etc. said he said. It’s like a game of telephone where info changes with every retelling.

Daniel: I was gonna point out that ad hominem attacks (against a private citizen, or someone posting something you don’t agree with) are par for the course for Right Wingers or Conservatives, and “Dubya” and Darth Cheney begat the laws and policies that allow US politicians to get away with surveillance, or that Ronald Reagan begat (or largely helped begat) the propaganda (from Fox “news” to more defense spending and severe cut-backs in education) which led to you and your ilk being so monumentally moronic, but…then I saw how you ended your post (actually using the “Communist” epithet that should’ve died off after the McCarthy debacle, but somehow became virulent inside the gray matter — brains seems to high a concept for you — of your Rightwing-Bible-Thumper-Gunhugger-Fearmongering-nose-picking group of ambulatory phlegm-types), and I decided…nah! Waste of time. And a waste of space (especially with some your wastrel pals, “wolvenwood”, or alternate-personalities, joining in.

Hello: just wanted you to know that this is Wolvenwood and I am NOT a wastrel nor am I an alternate personality to Daniel.I voted Democrat for FORTY YEARS. I poured my heart and soul into that party, until 2016 when I saw for myself how crooked and depraved Dems are. Hillary selling 20% of America’s uranium to the Russians for one. I have a Master’s degree, an IQ of 165 and have been researching our govt for 20 yrs, several hours a day every single day. I’ve found out alot of things. I used to think my dad had gone off the rails when he talked about the Communist infiltration in the U.S. in the 60s. However, he knew things I didn’t. He was a mustang admiral in military intelligence and later became one of Reagan’s top advisors – and he is one of the very few who had a stirling reputation in Washington D.C. Later on in life, in 2016 I learned that he was right.
What you need to know is that the Dem party has indeed been infilltrated by Communists. They are using all the same script from the Communist policiy playbook. I know what Communism looks like BECAUSE I WAS IN USSR IN 1977.I went thru Europe with a tour group and went to Romania, Bulgaria and Russia for one month. What I saw there was terrifying and I knew I never wanted to live under Communism. The Dems are crying about inequality and racism and completely ignoring basic things like economy which his completely falling apart but do you hear anything from the Dems? And making it legal to kill 9 month old newly born babies? REALLY DEMS, MURDER???? Just about every single one of the Dem leaders is a baby raping, cannibalistic, murdering, baby sacrificer. You don’t believe me of course, but I recommend you do your own research. Start with Liz Crokin on You Tube, she is a professional freelance journailst and has a channel on YT. This is real and there is tons of evidence. What I saw, with lots of proof, was enough to make me never vote Dem again, after 40 yrs of voting for them and donating to them.
Our country is in a huge mess and is on the verge of completely falling into madness. President Trump is trying to save our country. Don’t believe me? How about you listen to his inauguration speech? How about you actually give him a chance and see what he has to say? The only thing you have to lose is your country.
