A Selinsgrove man who allegedly committed a hit and run blamed a bumble bee for his reckless driving, according to police.
Police were called after a witness identified a truck that police claim belonged to Matthew Benner as responsible for a hit and run near the Susquehanna Valley Mall on May 31st.
When confronted by police, Benner said that he did not know that he hit a vehicle but blamed his driving on a wild bee that he was trying get out of his car, according to police.
“He (Matthew Benner) was coming from Lowes. A bee was in the vehicle and he did a u-turn to pull out of the road to get the bee out of his car. I informed Benner that (a witness of the crash) reported following him south on SR 11/15 for some distance. He then said it may have been before he had gone to Lowes. Benner said that he did not know that he had struck another vehicle. Benner said that he had a DUI hit and run crash in Northumberland county and because of that his insurance company dropped him. Benner said that the vehicle was his but it was registered and licensed under his friends name,” read the criminal complaint.
It was unknown what damage was done to the car that was hit.
Benner was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, turning movements along with several other violations.
A hearing will be held at 1025 U.S rt. 522 in Selinsgrove on 8/09 at 10:30.
