Looking for a ride?
Residents are trying to figure out why they’ve noticed a big increase in people in our area standing off on the side of the road looking for ride.
“I’ve been seeing more and more hitchhikers on the side of the road. I’m not sure what is going on but I think its dangerous,” Mike T. Jones told the Orange Street News.
Jones says he usually sees at least one a week now on the N Susquehanna Trail. During the last week alone Jones said he has spotted three hitchhikers with their thumbs up near the Texas Roadhouse.
“I’ve been commuting for years and now all of a sudden I start to see them,” he added. “It is strange.”
In Pennsylvania hitchhiking on turnpikes is illegal and it is also against the law to “stand on a roadway for the purpose of soliciting a ride.”
The Selinsgrove police were unavailable for immediate comment.
The average motorist should not pick up hitch hikers. At one time I did- but now I realize how dangerous it was.

Another thing to consider is that we no longer have a bus. Not everyone can afford a car. Some have DUIs. In nice weather these folks could maybe bike. I have done so to save money on gas.
