OSN SHORT STORY: Terrifying Sounds of a Smallville Election

By Hilde Kate Lysiak

Once there was a town. The town was called Smallville. It was (big surprise)a very small town where nothing much ever seemed to change.

But one day was different than the others. The day started out normally, but did not end that way. It was around noon on a Tuesday. People were walking back and forth down Main street, coming and going from their lunch hour at work. The town as quiet, as usual. And everyone had a smile on their face. The street was perfectly clean and the side walk was very pale. All of a sudden, there was a terrible sound. It was the kind of sound that could almost be felt more than heard. The type of noise hard to describe. But no one in Smallville could escape it. Everyone in the town heard it and everyone wondered what the sound was.

At the time, there were two people who were in charge of the town, Alice Seeee and Milissa Salt. Two days before the noise, they had gotten into a fight. There were a lot of wild dogs that had come into the town. Alice wanted to bring them to a vet and Millisa wanted to drop them off in the woods. They could not be in charge together any more so they had the people of Smallville vote to see who would remain in charge. Alice Seeee was wining.

Meanwhile, the townspeople started to act weird. No one was on time to their work. And people started to act more violent.

When it became time for the election, surprisingly, Millisa Salt won the vote. Things just got weirder and weirder. Everyone just stoped going to work, and people were kicking and punching things for no reason . People started to blame it on the sound they heard. They thought that who ever made that sound was responsible for all the weird behavior.

Soon people suspected that Millisa Salt was the one who made the noise becase no one could figure out why they actually voted for her. People were feeling light headed and dizzy all the time so Alice Seeee decided to do something about it. She waited in a bush outside Millisa’s house until she left. Then she snuck inside and set up a hidden camera. Then Alice went home and waited.

On the walk back to her place, Alice could hear all the dogs barking from the woods, now that Millissa had gotten her way and had them moved there. People on the sidewalks looked angry and unlike themselves. This all made Alice feel very sad and desperate that her hidden camera would provide some answers.

The following night, Alice again snuck into Millissa’s house and retrieved her camera. She rushed home and played the video:

It showed Millisa in the corner of the room in a dark brown chair. Her assisant, who had brown eyes and blonde hair, came in and told her about how everyone was acting weird.

“I never meant for the people to go crazy.” Millisa said. “But I guess that’s a small price to pay…”

Hi Hilde! I just read about your website on a post on Tumblr, and I wanted to drop by and say that I’m so so so proud of you!! Being a young girl isn’t easy at all, and having adults telling you that you shouldn’t be doing this amazing reporting is ridiculous. You have a passion and you are following it, and doing extremely well! Please stick with it!

Poor Smallville. First the meteor shower of 1989, now this. Hopefully Superman was there to save the day.
