A former reporter and local gadfly is running for the mayor of Selinsgrove.
Vince Stoops exclusively told the Orange Street News that he has gathered the needed signatures and will be running for mayor. Stoops says he decided to run for office so the people of Selinsgrove have more choices.
“Anyone with a passion for Selinsgrove would make a great Mayor. I have a passion for Selinsgrove, but, I am not unique. I am just happy that the citizens of Selinsgrove will have at least one alternate choice in this election. I would invite a write-in candidate to the race as well. Elections are about the citizens determining what they want,” Stoops told the Orange Street News.
Stoops will be running against Selinsgrove’s current Mayor, Jeff Reed. Stoops is known as a Gadly, defined by Wiki as “someone who interferes with the status quo of a society or community by posting upsetting questions usually directed at authority,” for his work as a local journalist at Selinsgrove Concerned Citizen. Last year the police were called after he began speaking during his turn to comment at a board meeting.
The election will be held in November.
Reed was not available for comment by the OSN’s deadline.

Do you think it appropriate to editorialize by referring to him as a gadfly in the headline?

This isn’t likely to go well for Vince. Last time he ran against Mayor Reed he was soundly defeated, earning only about 25% of the vote. And Mayor Reed has generally been received as an effective and popular civic leader.
