A Selinsgrove man was charged after allegedly stealing money from the hotel he was working at to help another costumer stay for free, according to police.

Charles Steven Barto, 58, was caught after allegedly taking money out of payments and letting costumers stay for free at the Golden Arrow Motel, which he managed.

“On 5/5/18 the defendant stated they he had two deposits in his vehicle. One was for $132.50 from 5/4/18 and the second was $250.00 from 5/5/18 that were taken from his vehicle while he was visiting his mother at the hospital. The defendant later wrote a note to the victim claiming that he took the money.

“The defendant did admit that on 4/19/18 he made a receipt for $132.50 but did not collect the money from a tenant. The defendant stated that he was trying to help a tenant and made the record book appear as if she paid so she would not be kicked out. Barto failed to collect the money and let them stay for free.

“The defendant also confirmed he took money from 3 payments in August 2018. The defendant stated that he took the money and was going to pay it back but failed to do so,” read the criminal complaint.

Barto was charged with Theft, Receiving Stolen Property, and Tampering With Records or Identification.

A hearing will be held on 1/22 at 1:45, at 1025 us rt 522, in Selinsgrove Pa.
