A patriotic Selinsgrove women had her flag stolen — for the tenth time!
But despite the repeated thievery, Grove resident Carol Handlan refuses to back down and is determined to proudly keep flying the Stars and Stripes.
“To me it (the flag) represents our freedom!” Handlan told the Orange Street News.
Handlan says that she is now prepared to do whatever it takes to protect Old Glory.
“The only way we are gonna keep it from getting stolen is by putting up cameras,” Handlan told the Orange Street News.
Last April, the OSN published a story on her other flags being stolen.
“(The flags) went missing over a year’s time, always late night, early morning. Two of the nine flags were found on SU’s campus and returned to us only to be stolen again,” Handlan told the Orange Street News at the time.
Flag stealing continues to be a serious problem in Selinsgrove.
Last summer, a Selinsgrove man who is a war veteran, even put up a sign warning the “bastards” to stop stealing his lights and American flag.
The large sign, which read, “To the bastard that’s stealing my lights you better smile because I have you on camera and will have you arrested,” was swiped out of the ground two weeks later.
The man finally gave up, deciding he couldn’t stop the thief and stopped flying his flag.
This most recent flag-stealing happened last month. Fortunately, Handlan recovered her flag the very next day in between houses on West Pine Street.
Handlan told the OSN that she is going to now take the flag down at night.
